Our self-guided bicycle tours help people experience Butchart Gardens, Sidney, and The Lochside Trail.
When we travel we typically do a combination of guided and self-guided bicycle tours. We will take a guided theme tour initially to learn about the city, and to gather information about where to eat, drink and must-see local attractions from our guide. Then we enjoy self-guided experiences so we have the flexibility to move at our own pace with the security of following a trusted route.
The self-guided exploration is always more relaxing with a little help from a local. Our self-guided bicycle tours at The Pedaler will help you make the most of visits to Butchart Gardens, Sidney-By-The-Sea, and the Lochside Trail.
The local Lochside Trail is a wonderful cycle route and there are many options for stopping to take in attractions and experience local food and drink. This trail runs from downtown Victoria all the way to the Swartz Bay ferry terminal at the northern end of Saanich Peninsula. A great way to get the best of both worlds – cycling and sightseeing – is to have great maps and cue sheets designed by locals so you travel the best routes, and have a great bicycle to ride that suits your style.
Here are a couple of the many self-guided bicycle tour options we offer:
- If you want to visit Butchart Gardens, and they are worth visiting, we recommend either our electric-assist bicycles or our all-road bicycles. Either model will get you there in a hurry. Our maps and cue sheets ensure you can cycle without worrying about the best route to take there and back to town. You travel at your own pace, spend some time enjoying the incredible gardens, and cycle back into town, at your own pace stopping wherever you please. The Visitor Centre at the Gardens provides a free baggage service for your helmet, back pack or pannier while you wander the gardens.
- If you simply want a scenic, relaxing, bicycle ride recommend heading towards the quaint seaside town of Sidney. If you don’t have the legs to cycle all the way to Sidney there are a couple nice turn-around points along the Lochside Trail. The route is a relatively flat, rural, and beautiful ride travelling at your own pace stopping as you like for selfies, snacks or a local beverage. The route is a combination of low traffic roads and The Lochside Trail. We recommend our All Road bicycles for this adventure – they are a fun, zippy bicycle that loves non-paved surfaces and is light and nimble on pavement too.
We will provide you with maps and all the equipment you need with a rental bicycle. Here is our recommended route from The Pedaler shop to Butchart Gardens and then over to the Lochside Trail and back into town.
